Tasting Notes: smooth, balanced, lightly malty

Description:  A high-grade second flush Assam black tea from the historic Harmutty Estate in Upper Assam, India. This full-leaf, tippy tea produces a smooth, rounded mouth feel with balanced briskness and light maltiness. Medium to full bodied and easy to drink, it is excellent enjoyed on its own and also takes milk, sugar, or honey well.

Assam Harmutty SFTGFOP1 offers a classic Assam profile with balanced maltiness and briskness. The flavor is smooth with natural sweetness from the golden tips which add depth without overpowering the cup. A straightforward and traditional Assam that works well as a daily black tea. An excellent selection for those who enjoy our English Breakfast and Classic Black Teas.

The Assam region lies along the Brahmaputra River in northeastern India, where hot, humid temperatures and heavy rainfall create ideal growing conditions for bold black teas. The Harmutty Estate, founded in the 1870s, is located in the Lakhimpur district near the Dikrong River and bordering the forests of Arunachal Pradesh. One of Assam’s oldest gardens, Harmutty is known for producing well-crafted orthodox teas with consistent quality and classic character.

Tippy is a tea term used when describing unopened leaf buds (Pekoe tips) that appear as golden flecks in the dry leaf. These tips contribute smoothness and natural sweetness to the brewed tea. Malty describes a flavor reminiscent of germinating grains such as barley, corn, or oat, commonly found in Assam teas. This tea is graded SFTGFOP1, meaning Special Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe One. This grade indicates very fine, carefully worked full leaves with a high proportion of golden tips. Compared to broken leaf grades such as BOP or FBOP, SFTGFOP1 teas are smoother and more refined, producing a cleaner, more balanced cup.

Natalie W. ★★★★★

The full leaves unfurl perfectly in the pot—so smooth and balanced, with just a whisper of malt. Perfect for a quiet afternoon.

Eli N. ★★★★★

The light maltiness is exactly what I look for in a second flush Assam, and this one delivers without any harshness. The full-leaf tea steeps a beautiful amber cup.

Joseph K. ★★★★★

These full leaves unfurl beautifully in my glass pot, and the liquor stays smooth with just a light maltiness, no bitterness even when I accidentally oversteep it. It's become my default morning cup.
