Category: Organic Black Tea

Tasting Notes: fig, toasted grain, ripe plum, honey

Description:  A deliciously smooth small-batch Japanese black tea from Kagoshima, made from the Benifuuki cultivar, a tea variety developed in Japan specifically for black tea production.

Wakoucha is Japan’s term for black tea, crafted using traditional oxidation methods and local cultivars. Still relatively rare, these teas are known for their natural sweetness and smooth, low-astringency profile.

Benifuuki Wakoucha brews to a reddish copper hue with layered notes of fig, toasted grain, and honey molasses. The tea deepens into rich plum and dark honey, with a rounded mouthfeel and a warming finish. Fuller-bodied than most Japanese teas, this harvest shows how black tea from Japan can offer richness without harshness.

Grown organically in the volcanic soils of southern Japan, this is a pure, unscented expression of Japan’s evolving black tea tradition.

Ingredients: organic Japanese black tea (wakoucha) from the Benifuuki cultivar grown in Kagoshima, Japan

Steep Time: steep 1 heaping teaspoon of tea per 8 oz below boiling water, 195-200°F, for 1-2 minutes

Ellie M. ★★★★★

The toasted grain and honey notes are incredibly balanced, and it brews up smooth without any bitterness. I’ve been enjoying it as an afternoon treat, and the small-batch quality really shows in every cup.

That ripe plum note really comes through in the finish — it’s subtle but makes the tea feel much more complex than your average black tea. Steeps a lovely deep amber color too, and the honey sweetness balances the toasted grain perfectly.

The fig and honey notes come through so clearly in the first steep, and it never turns bitter even when I forget about it for a few extra minutes. Been drinking this every morning instead of coffee and the plum finish lingers just enough without being too heavy.
