Category: BLACK TEA

Tasting Notes: floral, honey, cherry, malty sweetness

Description: Aseasonal, limited-edition Japanese black tea delicately scented with real sakura cherry blossoms and preserved leaves. Sakura Black (Wakoucha) is crafted from hand-harvested Japanese black tea and blended with sakura leaves and petals, creating a tea that is both distinctive and refined.

Wakoucha is the name for Japanese black teas.  Sakura Black (Wakoucha) is a stunning example of the rarity and elegance of Japanese black teas. It brews to a clean amber-red hue, with a soft floral aroma and warm notes of honey. The flavor is smooth and well-rounded, offering malty sweetness balanced by notes of stone fruit, think cherry and plum, alongside a subtle floral lift. The preserved sakura leaves enhance the aroma without overpowering the tea’s natural character.

While Sakura Sencha, the green tea version of cherry blossom scented teas, may be more familiar outside of Japan, this cherry blossom Wakoucha is a tea worth discovering, particularly for black tea and oolong enthusiasts.

Very limited quantities.

Ingredients: black tea, preserved cherry blossom leaves (cherry blossom leaves, sugar), cherry blossom petals

Steep Time: steep 1 heaping teaspoon of tea per 8 oz below boiling water, 195-200°F, for 1-2 minutes

Note: The preserved cherry blossom leaves in this tea are prepared with a touch of sugar, following Japanese tradition, to gently preserve their flavor.

Riley ★★★★★

I expected cherry to dominate, but the honey and malty notes come through first and the floral finish lingers. The preserved sakura leaves scattered through the tin are a nice touch, and it's smooth enough to drink without milk.

The floral aroma hits you the second the bag opens, and the honeyed maltiness balances the cherry notes perfectly. Steeped for three minutes, it tastes like spring in a cup. I’m already sad it’s limited-edition.

I was skeptical about cherry blossom tea being gimmicky, but the malty sweetness balances the floral notes perfectly. The preserved leaves in the brew add a subtle depth that makes this limited edition feel genuinely special.
