Tasting Notes: cocoa, honey, malt, dried fruit

Description: This extraordinary black tea is from the birthplace of tea itself, Yunnan province China, which produces some of the world’s most premium teas.“

Yun,” meaning cloud, references the cloud covered mountains of Yunnan province which is known for rich and complex teas.

This selection is a Dianhong (or Dian Hong) which is a high-grade black tea from China's Yunnan province, known for its golden buds and rich, malty, and often fruity, honey, and chocolatey flavor profile with low astringency.

The taste of this tea is deliciously malty and smooth with lingering sweet notes of cocoa, honey, and brown sugar layered with elements of dark chocolate, dried fruits, nuts, and a slight hint of warm spice.

This tea has a gentle sweet and comforting feeling, with an absence of astringency, which results in a velvety mouthfeel.

Premium Yunnan Gold Buds or Dian Hong teas are easily identified by its abundance of soft golden tips and its savory taste profile. Produced from a tea bud during the last 10 days of the plant's growth. After harvesting, the buds are painstakingly and meticulously sorted to keep only the most perfect leaves. This results in an exceptionally high-grade tea. Due the handcrafted artisan method of withering and oxidizing these premium tea leaves, the beautiful buds turn gold rather than black.  The result of these labor-intensive processes is a tea that is unmistakably smooth and complex.

Robert C. ★★★★★

The golden buds are so fuzzy and pretty in the tin, and the honey sweetness really stands out once you steep it about three minutes. Smooth enough to drink without milk, which is rare for me with a black tea.

Matthew ★★★★★

The malt and cocoa notes come through exactly as described, and there's a honeyed sweetness that lingers nicely after each sip. I've tried a lot of black teas from Yunnan, but these golden buds brew up remarkably smooth with zero bitterness, even when I accidentally let it steep a bit too long.

I brewed this up this morning and the maltiness is so deep, almost like a dark cocoa backbone that lingers nicely. The dried fruit note comes through on the finish, and the leaves are clearly high quality—they unfurl beautifully. For an organic black tea, the flavor is remarkably rich and smooth wit
